The Purpose of Parental Discipline is Training

Biblical discipline is not primarily about punishment but about training and guidance. It is rooted in a loving relationship and is designed to steer children toward what is best for them, not merely to please them in the moment. This form of discipline reflects the very character of God, who trains those He loves for their flourishing.

For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

When you correct your children, or reflect on your own upbringing, is the primary goal control or Christ-centered training? How can you more clearly connect correction to God’s loving character?
