Be the Friend You Need

If you want to have good friends, you must first learn to be a good friend. This simple truth often gets overlooked in our self-focused culture. We spend so much time thinking about what we need from others that we forget to consider what we're bringing to our relationships. Jesus modeled perfect friendship for us. He was a friend to sinners, loving them unconditionally while never compromising His standards. He celebrated with those who rejoiced and wept with those who mourned. He spoke truth in love, carried others' burdens, and ultimately laid down His life for His friends. Most importantly, He was our friend before we were ever His friend. This is the pattern for all our relationships. Instead of waiting for others to reach out, take the initiative. Instead of expecting others to carry your burdens, look for ways to carry theirs. Instead of hoping someone will encourage you, be the encourager. When you focus on being the friend you wish you had, you'll often find that the friendships you've been longing for begin to develop naturally. Remember, the goal isn't to manipulate others into friendship by being nice. The goal is to reflect Christ's love through genuine care and service. As you become more like Jesus in your friendships, you'll discover that carrying others' burdens actually makes you more like Him. And there's no better place to be than growing in Christlikeness through the beautiful gift of friendship. Today, instead of focusing on what you need from others, ask God to show you how you can be the friend someone else needs.
"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." - Galatians 6:2
