Friends Who Point You Home

Think about the people closest to you. Where do your conversations lead? Do your friends encourage you toward God, or do they pull you away from Him? The quality of our friendships often determines the direction of our spiritual journey. Jonathan and David's friendship gives us a beautiful picture of what godly friendship looks like. Despite the political tension between their families, Jonathan consistently pointed David toward God's strength and promises. When David was discouraged and running for his life, Jonathan didn't just offer sympathy - he helped David "find strength in God." That's the mark of a true friend. Every friendship should have direction, and that direction should point toward Jesus. This doesn't mean every conversation needs to be a Bible study, but it does mean that your closest relationships should encourage your faith rather than undermine it. Good friends celebrate your spiritual victories, gently challenge your compromises, and remind you of God's faithfulness when you're struggling to see it. Perhaps you're realizing that some of your current friendships lack this spiritual dimension. That's okay - it's never too late to begin steering conversations toward eternal things. Or maybe you need to seek out new friendships with people who share your desire to grow in faith. Remember, the goal isn't to find perfect friends, but to be the kind of friend who consistently points others toward the hope found in Christ.
"And Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God." - 1 Samuel 23:16
